How to Read Standard Crochet Shorthand

How to Read Standard Crochet Shorthand

Do you know the stitches, but not how to read a pattern? You need to understand Standard Crochet Shorthand
Crochet shorthand can be confusing. These days reading a crochet patterns is becoming even more difficult with newbie crocheters writing patterns that don’t make sense – making up abbreviations as the go.

NOTE: I am creating a second printable for XAV crochet shorthand.

So this is where you start – Standard Crochet Shorthand.

NOTE! Newbie crochet pattern writers commonly confuse where to put the abbreviation and where to indicate the number. Several early patterns on this site are also written incorrectly.

This is the confusion. 3 sc and sc 3 mean two different things.

3 sc means: Make 3 single crochets in One Space.
sc 3 means: Make a single crochet in each of the next 3 spaces.

However – many people (including the designers on this site) didn’t realize that when they started out. So you will find patterns that read 3 sc or 4 sc or 12 sc, that mean sc 3, sc 4, sc 12.
